A report by ZDNet has hinted that Samsung is considering monthly updates for US unlocked Galaxy smartphones. Samsung Mobile Security was quoted as having resolved update “challenges” and will begin releasing monthly security updates in the US soon.

The Korean company’s approach to update unlocked devices in the US has been cited as wanting by many experts. The ZDNet author labeled it as a ‘completely wrong’ approach and yet there are many contract-free smartphone users would love timely updates.

The most recent update for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge was in December last year, which still left all unlocked Galaxy smartphones running Android v6.0, Marshmallow. Major US carriers on the other hand already have upgraded to the latest Android v7.0, Nougat for these Galaxy S7 flagships.

Had Samsung forgotten regular updates for unlocked Galaxy smartphones? Perhaps not anymore. Apparently, in the conversation screenshot between a user and Samsung Mobile Security, the company is switching to monthly software updates with a commitment to do just that.

ZDNet got a response to their follow-up inquiry, where the Korean company said that previous updates were being released quarterly. They had somehow gotten around the ‘challenge.’

“Due to various circumstances, we have been releasing security updates for unlocked (open) Galaxy devices in the U.S. on a quarterly basis. However, we have now resolved the challenges; and we are committed to releasing security updates for those devices on a monthly basis.”

Following an email from Samsung, the March security update will be released soon for Galaxy S7 models. Although not clear, it is unlikely that the update will include Nougat. Perhaps it is only a security update for these unlocked Galaxy smartphones.

All of these is good news to users who prefer carrier-free or unlocked smartphones. Looking forward to the unlocked Galaxy S8? Well, the good news is that an unlocked variant just passed FCC certification. The official announcement will be made in under two weeks’ time.
