Unpacked 2017: Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ unveiled
The wait is over! Samsung officially unveiled their brand-new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ flagship smartphones at their Unpacked 2017 event in New York today. This officially confirms Galaxy S8 and S8+ specs and release date previously alleged. As the company says, the new seamless flagship duo may somehow stretch what we know about traditional smartphone designs, hardware and specs sheets and overall IU interactions.
As previously leaked, Galaxy S8 and S8+ have huge Infinity Displays, at 5.8 inches and 6.2 inches respectively. Samsung’s traditional Super AMOLED screens is set at Quad HD+, and produces up to 570 ppi on the S8 and 529 ppi on the S8+. The displays are meticulously designed without bezels, occupying over 80 percent of their front panels.
Samsung’s new Infinity Display technology produces a smooth, continuous surface with no harsh angles or buttons, for an immersive viewing experience. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 panel offers reinforced front and back protection, coupled with IP68 certification for waterproofing and dust resistance.
Premium metal and glass finish of Samsung’s flagships has been maintained for years now. We continue to expect such designs from new flagships. Galaxy S8 and S8+ have an overall compact design, that makes it easy to use one-handed.
Specs-wise, Galaxy S8 measures 148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0 mm and weighs 152g. The bigger Galaxy S8+ is dimensioned at 159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1 mm and weighs 173g. There is no significant difference on the duo’s specs sheets beyond screen size. Both smartphones offer the same 10nm processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895, depending on market availability), have 4GB RAM each and offer 64GB of storage. A 12-megapixel f/1.7 Dual Pixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel f/1.7 Smart autofocus selfie camera sit at their backs and fronts respectively.
Samsung learnt what difference missing an SD-card slot for expanding storage and a 3.5 mm audio jack have on the market. So, unlike Apple’s iPhone 7, both Galaxy S8 and S8+ feature microSD card support up to 256GB and there is also a 3.5mm audio jack. There is a new set of high-performance earphones tuned by AKG by Harman included in Galaxy S8 package box. They offer a comfortable hybrid canal-fit for improved noise cancellation and are made from anti-tangle metal-fabric material. Both devices feature fast wired and fast wireless charging capabilities, supports simultaneous device-to-device tethering and Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as Always-on Display.
Galaxy Note 7 was the first to rock an iris scanner. However, it did not die with the fiasco struck Note 7. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ have an iris scanner integrated into the top of the front panel. There is also a back-mounted fingerprint sensor to complete the duo’s biometric security. As mentioned before, Bluetooth 5.0 also makes its first entrance with Samsung’s Galaxy S8 flagships.
Another first for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ is Samsung’s Bixby virtual assistant. Samsung intends to help users communicate better and get more out of their devices. Users have a dedicated quick launch button for initiating voice commands. Besides preinstalled apps like Camera, Contacts, Gallery, Messages and Settings; Bixby will also be able to support third-party apps soon.
Samsung decided to power Galaxy S8 with a 3,000mAh battery and 3,500mAh battery unit for the Galaxy S8+. Both Galaxy S8 and S8+ run the latest Android 7.0 Nougat OS, and hopefully will get monthly firmware updates, even to contract free users in the US.
Samsung will first release the Galaxy S8 and S8+ duo in Europe in April 28, before they venture into North America, Asia and other markets. It will be available in Midnight Black, Arctic Silver and Orchid Gray colors.
